In Memoriam to Tung Nguyen, Storm Trainer

4.22.13

We are deeply saddened by the passing of a beloved figure in Storm history, Trainer/Coach Tung Nguyen.

Tung has trained many teams at professional, college, high school, and select levels. His quick witted, honest, direct style was always underlined with a terrific sense of humor, and always with the player's well being in mind. During Tung's time with the SYC Storm, we saw a move from a nice, competitive squad to a squad that competes in every game they play. They transformed into competitors in every sense of the word, and it was directly attributed to Tung's time with the Storm.

Tung will always be remembered by his players, but the void left by his death will be difficult, indeed, to replace. RIP, Tung...

2013 Lynchburg College Women's Soccer Showcase

1.6.13

In a showcase where no scores and standings were kept, the Storm were free to display their skills for several of western Virginia's best soccer programs.

The 2013 Lynchburg Women's Soccer Showcase was a 8v8 competition. If you do not play indoor soccer very often (which is the case with the Storm), it is not that easy to adapt to the smaller field size and number of players. However, after an interesting start in Game 1, the Storm pulled it together to showcase themselves quite well.

It was a nice weekend, and all that went seemed to enjoy the beauty of the I81/Rte 29 drive to/from Lynchburg.

Goodbye Joe Wendlberger, Hello Paul Ngend

12.15.12

Storm Head Coach, Joe Wendlberger, who coached the team from Spring 2010 through the end of Fall 2012, received a job offer on the West Coast that was "one he couldn't refuse". To be closer to family, and further his career, Joe, Kelly, and family bid us goodbye at the end of the VCCL Showcase tournament. We wish "Coach Joe" all the best in this new endeavor, and fondly thank Coach Joe for the selfless time and devotion to the players of the SYC Storm.

Taking over as Storm Head Coach is Paul Ngend. Coach Paul played professionally for 10 years before a leg injury ended his playing days. He attended a soccer school in France, and played 3 years in Central Africa for his native Cameron and for the country of Gabon; both on division one teams. He also played for the Cameron national team, an independent Peruvian soccer league, and the Washington International Soccer League. He holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) diploma as well as a NSCAA advanced diploma and a United States Soccer Federation C license. When he is not coaching and training, he is recruiting players for First Division Colleges, and acts as a soccer agent for top clubs in Europe and the United States.

We are honored to have Coach Paul aboard, and hope he will take the Storm through the rest of their high school-level playing days.

2012 VCCL SHOWCASE

12.9.12

During competition in another of the Storm's favorite tournaments (CASL Fair Play being the other), the SYC Storm drew a difficult road.

Game 1, against WAGS D4 Champs NVSC Majestics 95 Blue, was a very physical battle between two long-standing rivals. With very little in the way of either team garnering scoring opportunitites, the match ended in a draw 0-0. Storm officials Steve Randall and Brian Henderson, who handed out Storm Team Brochures to college coaches present at the game, reported that more than twenty college coaches viewed the game.

Game 2 matched the Storm against one of North Carolina's best, the Athletic of the Sandhill ACS Elite. While play was evenly distributed throughout the match, the ACS Elite forwards were a handful, and proved to be the difference in the match.

STORM END FALL 2012 WAGS SEASON
WITH SINGLE LOSS

11.14.12

In what can only be described one of the harder fought seasons in Storm history, the Storm ended the Fall 2012 WAGS season with a single loss.

In a series of low-scoring affairs, the Storm defense held up magnificently, and the offense generated early leads. However, a few late-game letdowns enabled sure wins to slip into ties, with the Storm final record a 3 wins, 1 loss, 4 draws.

With 6 new players on the roster, the team learned to play together under new Trainer, Paul Ngend.

With the Storm voting to Sitout the Spring 2013 Season (due to a high volume of high school varsity-level players), we are looking forward to great summer training and tournaments, and the WAGS Fall 2013 season.

STORM REACH CASL FAIR PLAY 2012 FINALS!

9.2.12

The Storm breezed through their first 3 matches at CASL Fair Play 2012 (Raleigh, NC), slotted to play in the U19 Girls First Division. The first match on Saturday was a 6-0 drubbing of GUSA 94 White, and the second match a hard fought 3-1 victory over the U18 MCSC Lady Panthers.

Sunday morning brought a very physical match against the SCAA U19 Gold, with the Storm prevailing in a very surgical 4-0 win.

However, in the Championship, versus the 94 CASL Mercury, the weather gods were not in our corner. With nasty storms (no pun intended) circling the Raliegh area, tournament officials decided on a shortened 20-minute halves match. The CASL Mercury came out hard, and scored the only goal of the game early, with the Storm responding with several very near misses, while dominating location of play in front of the Mercury goal. The second half can only be classified as dominated by the Storm, but again several near misses leaves this match in CASL Mercury's favor.

All around a great effort by the Storm!

Storm CASL Fair Play Finalists

9.5.11

The SYC Storm lost a heartbreaker in the CASL Fair Play Tournament Championship, 2-1 to the Triangle United Soccer Association 95G Silver, 2-1.

The Storm gave up an early 2-0 lead, and valiantly battled back to 2-1 in the second half. After several determined opportunities in front of TUSA's goal, time ran out, leaving the final, 2-1.

Nice effort, Storm!
